गणेश चतुर्थी - Ganesh Chaturdhi - Hindi Article

Sir Dorabji Tata

Sir Dorabji Tata (27 August 1859 – 3 June 1932) was son of J.N.Tata and he played an important part in the development of the Tata Group.

J.N. Tata was committed to four goals: setting up an iron and steel company, a world-class learning institution, a unique hotel and a hydro-electric plant. Only the hotel became a reality during his lifetime, with the inauguration of the Taj Mahal Hotel at Colaba waterfront in Bombay (now Mumbai) on 3 December 1903. It was set at the cost of 42 million rupees. Jamsetji Tata died on 19 May 1904. Sir Dorabji Tata, Eldest son of Jamsetji had pursued his fathers dreams and wishes.

Dorab Tata was the elder son of Hirabai and Parsi Zoroastrian Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata. He received his primary education at the Proprietary High School in Bombay. He went  to England in 1875, where he was privately tutored initially. He entered Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge in 1877 and was educated there for two years. He returned to Bombay in 1879. He continued his studies at St. Xavier's College, Bombay, and obtained a degree in 1882.

Dorab worked for two years as a journalist at the Bombay Gazette. In 1884, he joined the cotton business division of his father's firm.

Dorabji was intimately involved in the fulfillment of his father's ideas of a modern iron and steel industry, and agreed to the necessity for hydroelectric electricity to power the industry. Dorab is credited with the establishment of the conglomerates Tata Steel in 1907 and Tata Power in 1911, which are the core of the present-day Tata Group. Dorabji is known to have personally accompanied the mineralogists who were searching for iron fields.  Under Dorabji's management, the business of Tata Group that had once included three cotton mills and the Taj Hotel Bombay grew to include India's largest private sector steel company, three electric companies and one of India’s leading insurance companies. Founder of New India Assurance Co Ltd. in 1919, the largest General Insurance company in India. Dorabji Tata was knighted in January 1910 by Edward VII, becoming Sir Dorabji Tata.

On March 11, 1932, he established a trust fund which was to be used "without any distinction of place, nationality or creed," for the advancement of learning and research, disaster relief, and other philanthropic purposes. That trust is today known as the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. Dorabji additionally provided the seed money to fund the setting up of India's premier scientific and engineering research institution, the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

Dorabji died in Bad Kissingen, Germany on June 3, 1932, at the age of 73. He had no children.

It is a role model among educational institutions that impart 'vaideek' as well as 'lowkeek' knowledge. In addition to the regular state-level school syllabus, eligible students also undergo Veda-adhyananam. It is a delight to observe these young, budding adhikaris recite with utmost respect for their adhyapaka-teacher. The academic year keeps them very busy with both school work as well as veda-class. School vacation, however, gives them the extra time to visit homes on invitation for veda-paaraayanam.

M.L.A. Prabhakar - Victory Celebration

Chapter 1

The party members and the college students who campaigned for Prabhakar were elated at the surprise victory. Phone calls followed all around and large number gathered at the counting station to greet their new MLA and accompany him in the victory parade. The procession moved towards the IPP office. From there the procession moved toward the house of Prabhakar. On the way, Prabhakar visited all the temples and prayed in them. The procession participants dispersed at the house of Prabhakar.

Next day morning Prabhakar visited his college and met the principal. Principal called for a faculty meeting to felicitate their alumni now, the MLA of the constituency. Prabhakar thanked all the faculty members for the encouragement given to him and promised to them to make efforts to increase support to the institution to strengthen it to promote science and technology.

He then addressed a student meeting in the college and thanked all the students profusely for participating very actively in his campaign and make the win possible.

In the evening there was the public function in the Nagarabharati Auditorium. The first speech was given by the party town president. He thanked all the voters for electing a dynamic and sincere person to the MLA post. He assured them that all party members  will work actively to support Prabhakar. He requested people to meet party members to give suggestions as well as to redress their problems connected to various administrative offices in the town, district and the state.

Prabhakar in his speech, thanked all for supporting his attempt. He thanked his company employees and students especially for providing great support to him and his party. He promised to them to hold monthly discussion meetings to gather their views regarding various issues that an MLA has to vote in the assembly and other bodies where he will be nominated as a member. He also told them that he will declared his weekly program and people are free to meet him in his house cum office on all the days he is present in the town. He will also make available a box wherein all suggestions can be dropped at any time by citizens. His email id prabhakarmla@gmail.com  is available for sending emails.

Speech made by Prabhakar

Thank you very much.

You, Voters have made an independent choice in favour a first time politician.

From  north to south and east to west, you defied the odds and the experts and delivered a surprise victory to me and my party.

I thank all the people of Ranimundry for electing me as your next MLA.

Every day I hold this office, I will give all that is in me to serve you well and make you proud.

Most of all, I will remember that while the honor is mine, a MLA is people's representative.

I want to thank my party president, Mr. Venkateshwara and all the speakers for their call of congratulations. A hard contest is now behind us, and now we must come together as a united citizens of this town.

I promised to my family members and friends at the very beginning,  that win or lose we would run a race which would make us all proud. I kept my word and we ran a clean, issues oriented, upbeat campaign with the involvement of large number people.

When I first started running, I asked for a lot of help, because I knew it was going to be me against the  big party machines. As it happened all of us were against those machines. But we persisted with determination with our aim of sending one among us to the assembly.

I’m grateful to all those who supported me even when I was a long shot. I especially thank a friend who was there with encouragement from the very beginning, Venkateshwara Rao. He guided me using his experience as a contestant in the parliamentary election.

There are some  people who gave me a chance and believed in me. For the trust they placed in me, and for all they have taught me, I thank my friends and party members. The victory celebration today is because of your early belief and support.

It all started with me, and my visits to party members houses. Our party president appreciated our campaign with an address here. Then it resulted in the Chief Minister's hurried visit to the town to defend his party. His special criticism of me and my party showed what we have achieved through our way of campaign.

In every corner of our town, I met with people, looked them in the eye, shook their hand, and asked them for their vote. I didn’t worry about their party affiliation, and they didn’t worry about mine. It was simply shared conviction that brought us all together. That helps in serving all as MLA of the town. Now every one can visit me and discuss issues.

In Hyderabad, I will work in the assembly with members of all parties to express your views and influence them to support your views.

As I proudly take up the duty you have given me, I promise to do my best for Ranimundry, East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh and India.

I go to Hyderabad as the representative of no faction or interest, answering only to my conscience and to the people. I’ve got a lot to learn in the assembly,  but I know who I am and I know who I serve.

Thank you very much.

Swati Dandekar - An Indian - Presently a Politician in USA

Dandekar, a Democrat born and educated in India, has been living in Iowa for over thirty years. She has served three terms as a member in the Iowa House of Representatives. In 2008, she threw her hat in the ring to run for an Iowa state Senate seat that had voted Republican for almost 20 years. She reached  out to many rural Iowans with a platform based on education, quality health care, renewable energy and economic growth and she won 54.3 percent of the vote and became the senator.

Swati Dandekar took risk and chose to reach for a higher office that required her to knock on doors in areas where she had not represented the people and where knowledge of Asian Indian Americans may not have been high. As a result of her successful gamble, APAs now have a state Senate-level standard-bearer in a state not know for its high percentage of APAs.

Sen. Dandekar’s rise in politics has other lessons for APAs interested in community involvement, no matter where they live and no matter what their life circumstances, because she did not start life thinking that she would become a politician. She started with science-oriented undergraduate and masters degrees in India and came to Iowa to be with her husband in 1972. Like many stay-at-home mothers, she raised her two sons while doing volunteer work in the community.

As her kids got older, however, she got more involved in the community. She became president of the Parent Teachers Organization and did such a good job that, when a seat opened on the local school board, her friends convinced her to run. She learned how to ask for votes, raise money and speak out on the key issues facing her community. On Election Day, she won with 80 percent of the votes, and her political career was underway.

Not everyone can be as smart, organized and compassionate as Swati Dandekar. But all of us can learn to get involved in our local communities, speak out on issues of concern to us and get beyond our comfort zones so that we can have more impact on the world around us.

M.L.A. Prabhakar - Ranimundry Constituency

Mr. Prabhakar, a 35 year old person was working as maintenance senior engineer in the fertilizer factory. One day in 2008, he saw the news item regarding the preparations of Indian People Party for assembly elections of the state. He had studied political news from his six class onwards. He was fascinated by the achievements of national leaders. He also came across many criticisms of political leaders and their actions by opposition politicians. A thought came to him regarding contesting in the elections. Even though he did not contest elections himself, he had taken active interest in student elections in school and college. He is working in a private company and hence he can take leave and contest for the election. The risk is less as he can continue with his job subsequent to the election. He helped the candidates of Indian People Party in the earlier elections and hence he was confident of getting their advice regarding his candidature.

He went and met the M.P. candidate in the earlier election, Mr. Venkateswara Rao. Venkateswara Rao is a local lawyer and was a member of the party for a long time. He polled around 18,000 votes in the last parliamentary election and from the Ranimundry assembly constituency he polled 4,300 votes. Venkateswara Rao encouraged Prabhakar to join the party and try seeking a ticket from the constituency. Prabhakar then met his Union Secretary of the factory sought his opinion. He got the assurance of support from the union secretary. He then wrote to the former president and secretary of his alma mater when he was in final year. They are working in other towns. He got favourable responses from them regarding his idea. He then went and met the current president and secretary of his alma mater seeking their support in his proposed endeavour. He showed them the letters from the former president and secretary of his time. The current president and secretary showed happiness that one of their alumni was trying to take up a leadership role in the political system of the constituency and the state. Prabhakar met the faculty of his department and sought their blessings. He was warned by them of the various difficulties and challenges of the election. That made him think about the consequences of his adventure. He discussed the issue with his family members.

He met the town president of the Indian People Party along with Venkateshwara Rao and joined the party as an official member. Subsequently, he went around and informed his many friends and acquaintances and got twenty five members enrolled as party members getting the active party member status in the party. Prabhakar is an idealist and he is doing things presently with a mission to do good to the society. He is a good public speaker and writer and he had participated in number of competitions in his school and college days. The ideal situations that he portrayed in his speeches and essays are pushing him now to do things in practice.

He started going every day to the houses of two members of the party. On Saturday and Sunday, when he had holidays, he was visiting ten houses of party members and friends. At each house,  he was making a point of meeting all the family members and he was making a mental note. At the end of the day, he used to write the particulars of families in diary and used to post a letter thanking them for the hospitality extended to his on his visit. In three months time, he was able to meet 500 persons. In some of the visits, Venkateswara Rao also joined him. Simultaneously he requested his brother and sister also to visit the houses of their friends and inform them the possibility of his contesting the assembly elections. He sent letters to the five local papers every month regarding various civic issues.

In the next three months, Prabhakar focused on his company employees. His fertilizer company is employing 5000 people. He met another 500 families in the next three months. In these visits he made it a point to request and take along with him an active member of the Indian People Party of the area along with him. This daily contact activity by Prabhakar started creating an interest in the party machinery. They were surprised at the daily routine of the Prabhakar and his keeping track of the news related to the party in a bill board that he maintained in front of his house. Prabhakar invited people of the town to write to him through email. His email id was there in his bill board and also in his letters to the editor in local dailies. He started receiving emails with some suggestions and complaints and he used to forward them appropriately and inform the the person sending the email that he forwarded the mail to his party leaders in the town, district or state and and to appropriate municipal and state authorities.

In 2009, The elections came near and there was a search for candidates in the Indian People Party. Till that time, Indian People Party was only a contestant for the sake of contesting. But still there was a good competition to contest the elections. Some party members told Prabhakar to try for the seat. Through Venkateshwara Rao, Prabhakar sent his intention to contest the election. After hectic lobbying from many interested candidates, Prabhakar was given the go ahead to be the candidate for the party. The constituency has 200 polling booths and Prabhakar requested his college student council to help in creating youth booth committees. There are six engineering colleges in the constituency with 2500 students. The student council came out with a list of 600 students from engineering colleges as well as other colleges spread across all the booths with 3 students for booth. The IPP allocated two of its members for each booth. His company union provided two of its members for each booth. This systematic planning of booth committees and meetings of the booth committees had increased the morale of the party members. When party members wanted to know the preparations of the constituency for the election, they were shown the booth committee formation. The alumni association of the college appealed for funds to support Prabhakar and sizeable amount flowed in. The party observers were happy to know that for the first time, such a fund was collected by a candidate. His company employees also contributed fund to his campaign. His company management also made a token contribution to show support to their employee.

This advance preparation by Prabhakar and the support extended to him by his alumni and colleagues made the party bosses bold to approach various businessmen and rich persons who normally donate to political parties in every election. The activity created by Prabhakar is noticeable in the town. Local papers as well as State level papers are describing the increased activity by the IPP candidate. The candidates of the big party parties have their vote banks and their volunteers are discouraging the persons working for Prabhakar. But the students and company employees are doing their campaign with a personal support for their colleague or alumni and in the hope that he will be a more accessible and committed politician. They hope that he can make some minor difference in the political system of the state and their constituency even though they are aware that one man cannot do much. He will be anyway in opposition.

People started seeing more flags, more banners of IPP in the election. They were getting phamplets in their houses requesting them to vote for IPP. Each house was contacted by booth committee members to vote in favour of IPP. They all got voter identity slips from IPP. Because of the union members, the working house localities also got good coverage on behalf of IPP this time. During elections, Prabhakar's visits to various families earlier gave a benefit. Wives of IPP party members took more active interest to tell their friends about friendly ways of Prabhakar. The parents of party members also got involved on behalf of Prabhakar. The children identified with Prabhakar.  The Party State President was impressed with reports about the constituency and visited the constituency and addressed a meeting. He exhorted all the party members to do their best to get maximum number of votes for the party.

The election was held. The result was a surprise to many. Prabhakar won the election with 32,678 votes. The contest had three other serious contenders. They got 28,564;  22,391; and 19,255. Now Prabhakar is an MLA.

GURUJI GOLWALKAR’s thought on Indian Educational System

The right attitudes and aspirations have to be implanted in the young minds right from the elementary school stage. For that we should draw upon the limitless storehouse of our ancient as well as modern literature which depicts our mighty national heroes and events. Especially our young men must be made to feel proud of being born in the great lineage of Rishis and Yogis.

Development in Gujarat - 2013 Reviews

The Two Faces of Development in Gujarat during Narendra Modi's Time
Economic Times Article - 1.8.2013

"Growth in Gujarat is not a point of debate," says Amita Shah, director of Gujarat Institute of Development Research. In the five years before Modi took charge, the state's average growth in GDP ( gross domestic product) was 2.8%. Under him, between 2002-03 and 2011-12, it was 10.3%. Only three small states—Sikkim, Uttarakhand and Delhi—have grown faster.
