Nididhyasana Visualization in Vedanta

 AI

Nididhyasana is the third and final stage of Vedantic meditation, where intellectual knowledge transforms into direct, felt experience. Unlike standard visualization where you picture an external object, nididhyasana uses conceptual visualization to shift your identity from your thoughts and body to your true nature: pure awareness.

Here is a step-by-step visualization practice based on traditional Advaita Vedanta:

🌌 The Analogy of the Ocean and Space

1. The Screen and the Movie

The Concept: A movie screen is never altered by the fires or floods in the film.

The Visualization: Close your eyes. See your mind as a massive cinema screen. Your thoughts, memories, and emotions are just images projected onto it.

The Shift: Notice that you are not the changing movie. You are the stable, unblemished screen that allows the movie to be seen.2.

The Ocean and the Waves

The Concept: A wave is nothing but water taking a temporary shape.

The Visualization: Picture a vast, deep ocean. Your thoughts, anxieties, and bodily sensations are individual waves rising and falling on the surface.

The Shift: Realize that every wave is made entirely of water. You are not a single, fragile wave tracking toward the shore. You are the entire body of water—vast, deep, and undisturbed by the ripples on top.3.

The Space in a Room

The Concept: Space contains everything but is never contaminated by what it holds. The Visualization: Visualize the air and space inside your room. Furniture can be moved, walls can be painted, but the space itself remains completely untouched.

The Shift: Recognize that your awareness is like that space. Thoughts, sounds, and physical pain happen within your awareness, but they cannot scratch, burn, or alter your true self.

🧘 How to Practice

Sravana (Hearing): Remember the ultimate truth: "You are not the mind; you are the ultimate consciousness (Brahman)."

Manana (Reflection): Clear any intellectual doubts. Ask yourself: "If I can observe my thoughts, how can I be my thoughts?"

Nididhyasana (Meditation): Rest deeply in the visualizations above. Rest as the Ocean, the Screen, or the Space. When a distracting thought arises, do not fight it. Greet it as a temporary wave, let it dissolve back into your ocean, and remain as the water.

Liberation in early Advaita Vedanta

by Aleksandar Uskokov | 2018 | 195,782 words

Hinduism Hindu Philosophy Vedanta

Summary: This thesis highlights that liberation (in Sanskrit: Moksha) is posited as the “highest good”—i.e., it represents freedom from the cyclical process of birth and rebirth. This essay further shows how Shankara’s doctrine emphasizes that liberation is solely derived from knowledge of Brahman, not from ritual actions or meditation, marking a clear departure from the views of his Vedic contemporaries and predecessors who advocated for a combination of rituals and meditation for attaining liberation.

1 to 47
Avatarika - Introduction

Seven questions of the student

48 -

49. What is bondage, forsooth ? How has it come (upon the Self) ? How does it continue to exist ? How is one freed from it ? What is this non-Self ? And who is the Supreme Self ? And how can one discriminate between them ? -- Do tell me about all these.

124. Now I am going to tell thee of the real nature of the supreme Self, realising which man is freed from bondage and attains Liberation.

138. One who is overpowered by ignorance mistakes a thing for what it is not; It is the absence of discrimination that causes one to mistake a snake for a rope, and great dangers overtake him when he seizes it through that wrong notion. Hence, listen, my friend, it is the mistaking of transitory things as real that constitutes bondage.

192. The disciple questioned: Be it through delusion or otherwise that the Supreme Self has come to consider Itself as the Jiva, this superimposition is without beginning, and that which has no beginning cannot be supposed to have an end either.

200-201. Previous non-existence, even though beginningless, is observed to have an end. So the Jivahood which is imagined to be in the Atman through its relation with superimposed attributes such as the Buddhi, is not real; whereas the other (the Atman) is essentially different from it. The relation between the Atman and the Buddhi is due to a false knowledge.

212. The disciple questioned: After these five sheaths have been eliminated as unreal, I find nothing, O Master, in this universe but a Void, the absence of everything. What entity is there left forsooth with which the wise knower of the Self should realise his identity.
