Narendra Modi - Brief Biography

Narendra Damodardas Modi was born on September 17, 1950, at Vadnagar, Northern Mehsana District Gujarat. Narendra Modi completed his schooling in Vadnagar.

Modi started as a Tea-Seller on Ahmedabad Bus Station.

He joined Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) and by working sincerely to achieve the objectives of the organization as a full time member, termed as pracharak, he became a secretary in Bharatiya Janata Party. From there, he joined the Government of Gujarat as Chief Minister.  He won three elections in Gujarat as Chief Minister and today, he is the Prime Minister Candidate of BJP in the forthcoming elections for Lok Sabha. Despite his poor economic background and social status as a member of other backward caste, he achieved something many Indians at his social level could not. In the process he also brought respect to his organization RSS. RSS was accused of upper caste bias. The elevation of Modi due to his personal achievement first demolishes that accusation. Modi was supported by RSS in his efforts. Due to Modi's success, many more RSS pracharaks can now come into more active social and political life and can dream of something big.

Narendra Modi is now the PM Candidate for Bharatiya Janata Party for the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections

Narendra Modi - Life and Times - Details

Modi's father ran a teashop at the Vadnagar railway station and Modi used to help his father in the mornings at the railway station, and when the bell rang at the school, he used to cross the railway track to reach the class. Modi started selling tea in helping his father when he was six years old.  Thel tea was sold to passengers whenever an odd train came into the small Vadnagar station.

On Diwali day in 1958, Narendra Modi presented himself as a bal swayamsevak (child member of RSS) to Vakil Saheb, a state level functionary in RSS in Vadnagar Shakha.

Modi attended Bhagavatacharya Narayanacharya High School, a co-ed Gujarati-medium institution situated at the entrance to the old city of Vadnagar.

At age of 18, Modi decided to set off and wander in the Himalayas. The only source of information for Modi’s travels during this time is Modi himself:  His family had no idea of his whereabouts. After two years, he returned and moved to  Ahmedabad and work at his uncle Babubhai’s canteen at the city bus stand.

Thus, Modi started his career as a Tea-Seller on Ahmedabad Bus Station. He began work in the staff canteen of Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC). subsequent to this, he set up his own teacart on a cycle near Geeta Mandir. Some pracharaks used to have tea at his cart after they returned from their morning shakha

Soon he wound up his teacart and moved to the RSS State Headquarters Hedgewar Bhawan as an assistant.  His daily routine, according to Modi himself was  making tea and breakfast for the pracharaks in the morning, cleaning up the entire building, consisting of eight or nine rooms and washing the clothes of  Vakil Saheb (State Prachark).

He stayed there till he became a full–time pracharak of the RSS. Modi became a pracharak in the RSS in 1971.

As a prachark, he was given charge of Sangh's student wing, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), in Gujarat.  Modi was appointed as the RSS pracharak in-charge for Gujarat of the Sangh’s student front, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a position he held through the Emergency. Modi organised agitations and covert distribution of Sangh's pamphlets during the Emergency.

During emergency, Modi graduated in political science from Delhi University  After emergency, he completed M.A. in political science as an external student from Gujarat University.

Modi worked as a ''pracharak'' in the Kangra region of Himachal Pradesh where people remember him as a docile and humble man.

Narendra Modi's abilities and leadership qualities were seen in the early days of his student life when he became the student leader of Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad.  He played a prominent role in the anticorruption movement in 1974 in Gujarat.

During the anti emergency movement, Modi successfully stayed underground and organized number of activities. His abilities were recognized by many during this period.

In 1978, one year after the end of the Emergency, Modi was appointed as the RSS pracharak in-charge for six districts in central Gujarat. Three years later, at the young age of 31, he was promoted  to become the liaison between the Sangh and all its frontal organisations across the whole of Gujarat.

Modi worked as a ''pracharak'' in the Kangra region of Himachal Pradesh where people remember him as a docile and humble man.

in 1987, when he was appointed as the organisation secretary for Gujarat. Thus, he entered politics in 1987 by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party.  He was responsible for the success of BJP in Ahmedabad Municipal Elections.

Within a year, he was elevated to the level of General Secretary of the Gujarat unit of the party. BJP organised a series of roadshows, beginning with two statewide campaigns in which Modi played a key behind-the-scenes role: the Nyay Yatra in 1987 and the Lok Shakti Rath Yatra in 1989. In 1990, when the BJP president LK Advani began his Ayodhya Rath Yatra from the Somnath Temple in Gujarat, Modi facilitated the first stretch of the campaign.  Modi received his first national assignment, as the organiser of the Ekta (Unity) Yatra undertaken by the BJP’s President Murli Manohar Joshi from  the southern tip of Tamil Nadu to Srinagar.

In 1995 he was made the National Secretary of the party in-charge of five major states in India – a rare distinction. He traveled extensively through out the world, which helped him to develop a global perspective.

During his tenure in New Delhi as the BJP''s national spokesman in the late 1990s, he went to the US for a three-month course on public relations and image management. He is a good learner and his course on public relations now helps him to get the publicity he desires.

In 1998, a few days after Atal Bihari Vajpayee took office as prime minister, Modi was promoted to the post of the national party’s organisation secretary: the bridge between the BJP and the RSS for all of India.

In 2001, BJP  entrusted him with the responsibility of taking over as the CM of Gujarat.  On 7 October 2001, Modi was appointed the Chief Minister of Gujarat.  "For the RSS, Modi’s installation was a significant accomplishment: for the first time in its history, a fulltime pracharak had become a chief minister," wrote a magazine. He won elections in Gujarat as chief minister in 2002, 2007 and 2012 and He is the Chief Minister of Gujarat now.

On 13 September, 2013, the Parliamentary Board of BJP declared him to be the PM Candidate for the forthcoming Lok Sabha Elections

Under Modi, there was high growty in agriculture in Gujarat. In their book, High Growth Trajectory and Structural Changes in Gujarat Agriculture, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) professors Ravindra Dholakia and Samar Datta explained Gujarat’s agricultural success thus: “It is fully endogenous, systematically led by long-term vision and comprehensive strategy requiring solid commitment and dedication to the cause, political will to pursue market-oriented reforms of policies and institutions, interdepartmental and inter-ministerial coordination and cooperation, and a responsive and entrepreneurial farming community.”

Narendra Modi's Activities during Emergency

Due to Janta Morcha govt headed by Babubhai Patel in Gujarat,  people did not face the tremendous excesses of Emergency in Gujarat. Many activists had come and stayed in Gujarat and worked for restoring democracy in the country.
Like other RSS pracharaks, Narendra Modi  was also assigned the responsibility of making arrangements for the movement, gatherings, meetings, distribution of literature etc. Narendra Modi worked actively with Nathbhai Zagda and Vasant Gajendragadkar.
Congress govt banned RSS and jailed its leaders. Senior RSS leader Keshvrao Deshmukh was arrested in Gujarat.  The moment Modi realized that Keshavrao was arrested, he escorted another senior RSS man Nathalal Zagda to safe place riding him on a scooter.
Also during emergency Mrs. Indira Gandhi had decided to censor the independent press. Several journalists were arrested under MISA and DIR.  It appeared as if there was total blackout of true and correct information. Besides this several prominent political opponents were imprisoned. It appeared that dissemination of information would be impossible. But it was during this time that Narendrabhai and several RSS pracharaks took responsibility of fulfilling this herculean task. Narendra Modi  used innovative ways to spread information and distribute literature.

Since RSS was banned,   RSS leaders asked swayamsevaks become members Jan Sangharsh Samitis and carry on activities. It was at this time Narendrabhai felt the need to support the families of those swayamsevaks who had decided to contribute fully for the movement. Narendra Modi bhai took the initiative of identifying people who would support the families of swayamsevaks. Modi  conducted the anti emergency movement successfully remaining underground. Many confidential meetings were organized in Maninagar and Narendra Modi did this task wonderfully.

Members of  Jan Sangharsh Samiti used to do public reading of Constitution, law and other literature to inform people. Like many other RSS pracharaks, Narendra Modi  also provided support to Jan Sangharsh Samiti.

Narendra Modi was also involved in supplying information to leaders who were imprisoned by the govt. He was master of disguise and despite there was risk of his arrest he used to disguise and went to prison and supplied crucial information to leaders in jail. Not even once could the police recognize Narendrabhai.  In those days a magazine named ‘Sadhna’ decided to show courage against emergency and censorship. Narendra Modi promoted the circulation of Sadhna.

In days of emergency pracharaks of RSS including Narendrbhai were instrumental in many movements against the excesses of the Indira govt. In those days RSS supported Sangharsh Samiti organized ‘MuktiJyoti’ yatra. It was bicycle yatra in which many pracharaks participated and took out this yatra on cycle and went from one place to another spreading message of democracy.

It was in emergency only that  people became aware of brilliant skills of Narendra Modi. While he worked as selfless pracharak,  he also ensured that organization and other pracharaks didn’t face financial problem. Modi also ensured that true and correct information about excesses of emergence also reach to Indians living in other countries. Today we all have experienced the benefits of good governance of Narendrabhai but it is also important to acknowledge his contribution as a selfless karyakarta in emergency.

Interesting question
How will you persuade minorities including Muslims to vote for you?
All the citizens, all the voters, are my countrymen. So my basic philosophy is, I don’t address this issue like this. And that is a danger to democracy also. Religion should not be an instrument in your democratic process.

Budget 2015-16

The budget has innovative features. Supporting and promoting 58 million micro unit entrepreneurs providing employment to 128 million people even though many of them are farmers is a very good idea. Already all of them must have acquired Aadhar cars and also Jan Dhan accounts. Once they are identified as entrepreneurs and the employment they are providing is known,  just encouraging them provide one more job would mean another 50 million jobs. The digital information system will make implementing new schemes more easy as feedback can be obtained faster and instructions can be given faster. It is very nice that Modi proved his ability to influence the entire country very quickly through his jan dhan scheme.

After Mahatma Gandhi, Modi is the person to influence the mass of the country that way into a positive action when he is not in power and also when he came into power.

V.D. Savarkar - Biography, Thoughts and Contribution

1925

Hindu Rashtra Darshan

Veer Savarkar

Prabhat Prakashan

A Hindu, to sum up the conclusions arrived at, is he who looks upon the land that extends from Sindhu to Sindhu, from the Indus to the seas, as the land of his forefathers, his pitrabhu, who inherited the blood of that race whose first discernible source is traced to the Vedic Saptasindhus, which, on its onward march, assimilated much that was incorporated and ennobling. The Hindus, who inherited and claimed as their own the culture of that race, as expressed chiefly in their common classic language, Sanskrit, and represented by a common history, a common literature, art and architecture, law and jurisprudence, rites and rituals, ceremonies and sacraments, fairs and festivals, and who, above all, address this land, this Sindhustan, as their punyabhu, as the holy land, the land of their saints and seers, of godmen and gurus, the land of piety and pilgrimage. These are the essentials of Hindutva – a common rashtra, a common jaati, and a common sanskriti. All these essentials could best be summed up by stating in brief that they are Hindu to whom Sindhustan is not only a pitrabhu but also a punyabhu.

—Excerpts from this book

1950

Biography by Dhananjay Keer

Swatantrya Veer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was born on Monday, the 28th May 1883, at 10 p.m. at Bhagur, a village near Nasik.

While a junior high-school student, his article on ‘ The Glory of Hindusthan’ appeared in two parts as an editorial in the local paper, Nasik Vaihhav.

After many varied discussions Vinayak won Paranjpe’s followers over to his side, administered to themthe vow, and formed a Patriots’ Group of three members. This Group, established in 1899, soon assumed the shape of a Friends’ Union called ‘ Mitra Mela ’ at the beginning of 1900. Chosen youths of merit and mettle were secretly initiated into this fold.  The Mitra Mela sprouted into the world-famous Abhinava Bharat in 1904, its network was spread over Western and Central India and subsequently its branches in the form of the Ghadr Party resounded in England, France, Germany, America, Hong-Kong, Singapore and Burma with their heroic deeds and risings like the Komagata Maru episode. The aimand ideal of the Mitra Mela was absolute political Independence of India, and it emphatically asserted that such an independence could be won, if need be, by an armed revolt. Its watchward was instruction and insurrection.

At Ferguson College,  a Savarkar group was formed. This band of purposeful youths captured almost all departments of the college institutions from the Dining Club to the Library. It was a patriots’ group, studious, thoughtful, sober, aspiring and yet greatly obliging. The group started a hand-written weekly named the Aryan Weekly, in which Savarkar often wrote illuminating articles on patriotism, literature, history and science with ease and elegance. Some of the thought-provoking articles from this weekly found their way even into local weeklies and newspapers of Poona. One of those brilliant articles of Savarkar was “ Saptapadi ” in which he had dealt with the seven stages of evolution that have to be gone through by a subject nation.

While at college he had convened in 1904 a meeting of some two hundred selected members of the Mitra Mela. In an atmosphere fueled with grandeur and religiosity, the name of the Revolutionary Party was changed from the Mitra Mela to the Abhinava Bharat. Now the party  girded up its loins to extend its political and revolutionary activities and influence, spread its net all over India, and assume the responsibility of a revolution on an all-Bharat scale.

About this time news came to India that Pandit Shyamji Krishna Varnia, then resident of London, offered scholarships for Indian students desiring to study in Europe. Giving a brief sketch of his career Savarkar proceeds in his application : “ Independence and Liberty I look upon as the very pulse and breath of nation. From my boyhood, dear sir, upto this moment of my youth, the loss of Independence of my country- and the possibility of regaining it form the only theme of which I dreamt by night and on which I mused by day.”

Pandit Shyamji Krishna Verma signed  an agreement before Tilak and awared Savarkar  a sum of Rs. 400 through him as the first instalment of the Shivaji Scholarship. His comrades and devotees gave him in Bombay a hearty sendoff on June 9, 1906, and the steamer Persia, left Bombay on her great voyage with the prince of Indian Revolutionaries on her deck for the consummation of his great vision, great aim and great deeds.

Savarkar reached London in the first week of July 1906, and took his lodgings at the India House founded by Pandit Shyamji Krishna Varma. In due course Savarkar was admitted to Gray’s Inn, one of the four Iims of Court in London, Pandit Shyamji, had established a Home Rule Society and the India House during the first quarter of 1905.

In 1907 he entrusted the management of the India House entirely to Savarkar and left for Paris.

In Port Blair jail, Savarkar persuaded the prisoners to write their letters in the provincial languages or conveniently in Hindi and to write their complaints, answers, or applications in Hindi so that the necessity and urgency of Nagari-knowing Munshis should be felt increasingly. The effect was tremendous. Formerly ninety per cent of the letters from and to the Andamans were in Urdu, a few years after the arrival of Savarkar the tables were turned and the ratio was in the reverse order. Some distinguished prisoners from the Punjab, who had composed their poetry in Urdu, got themselves accustomed to the Nagari Hindi and re-wrote their poems in Hindi

Savarkar: Echoes from a Forgotten Past, 1883–1924

Vikram Sampath

Penguin Random House India Private Limited, 16-Aug-2019 - Literary Collections - 624 pages

As the intellectual fountainhead of the ideology of Hindutva, which is in political ascendancy in India today, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar is undoubtedly one of the most contentious political thinkers and leaders of the twentieth century. Accounts of his eventful and stormy life have oscillated from eulogizing hagiographies to disparaging demonization. The truth, as always, lies somewhere in between and has unfortunately never been brought to light. Savarkar and his ideology stood as one of the strongest and most virulent opponents of Gandhi, his pacifist philosophy and the Indian National Congress.

An alleged atheist and a staunch rationalist who opposed orthodox Hindu beliefs, encouraged inter-caste marriage and dining, and dismissed cow worship as mere superstition, Savarkar was, arguably, the most vocal political voice for the Hindu community through the entire course of India's freedom struggle. From the heady days of revolution and generating international support for the cause of India's freedom as a law student in London, Savarkar found himself arrested, unfairly tried for sedition, transported and incarcerated at the Cellular Jail, in the Andamans, for over a decade, where he underwent unimaginable torture.

From being an optimistic advocate of Hindu-Muslim unity in his treatise on the 1857 War of Independence, what was it that transformed him in the Cellular Jail to a proponent of 'Hindutva', which viewed Muslims with suspicion?

Drawing from a vast range of original archival documents across India and abroad, this biography in two parts-the first focusing on the years leading up to his incarceration and eventual release from the Kalapani-puts Savarkar, his life and philosophy in a new perspective and looks at the man with all his achievements and failings.

Savarkar (Part 2): A Contested Legacy, 1924-1966

Vikram Sampath

Penguin Random House India Private Limited, 26-Jul-2021 - Biography & Autobiography - 600 pages

Was Savarkar really a co-conspirator in the Gandhi murder? Was there a pogrom against a particular community after Gandhi's assassination? Decades after his death, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar continues to uniquely influence India's political scenario. An optimistic advocate of Hindu-Muslim unity in his treatise on the 1857 War of Independence, what was it that transformed him into a proponent of 'Hindutva'? A former president of the All-India Hindu Mahasabha, Savarkar was a severe critic of the Congress's appeasement politics. After Gandhi's murder, Savarkar was charged as a co-conspirator in the assassination. While he was acquitted by the court, Savarkar is still alleged to have played a role in Gandhi's assassination, a topic that is often discussed and debated. In this concluding volume of the Savarkar series, exploring a vast range of original archival documents from across India and outside it, in English and several Indian languages, historian Vikram Sampath brings to light the life and works of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, one of the most contentious political thinkers and leaders of the twentieth century.

Veer Savarkar Father of Hindu Nationalism

Jaywant Joglekar
Lulu.com, 01-Oct-2006 - History - 200 pages
Great leaders of the past century dominated Indian political scene for a decade or two. But Savarkar's name shines brightly from 1900 to 1966. Ganghiji said, 'No independence without Hindu-Muslim unity.' But Pakistan was created. When the late Prime Minister Nehru chided the Hindu nationalists for advocating Hindu Raj, Savarkar said, 'The choice, therefore, is not between two sets of personalities but between two ideologies, not Indian Raj or Hindu Raj but Muslim Raj or Hindu Raj, Akhand Hindustan or Akhand Pakistan.' He knew Savarkar personally and wrote his biography in Marathi. The English version 'Veer Savarkar, Father of Hindu Nationalism' has been done now. Savarkar's biography enables the reader to understand the politics of the last century.

The Life and Times of Veer Savarkar

A.K. Gandhi
Prabhat Prakashan, 15-Sep-2020 - Biography & Autobiography - 144 pages

Vinayak Damodar Sarvarkar popularly known as Veer Sarvarkar has a unique place in the annals of history. Controversy surrounds his name. Some consider him to be one of the greatest revolutionaries in the freedom struggle of India while others think of him to be a communalist. However; there is no doubt that he was a freedom fighter; who not only fought for his country but also evoked feelings of patriotism in fellow citizens through his writings.
His biography is an eye-opener for it depicts the trials and tribulations of a person; who was sentenced to 50 years of hard imprisonment in the Cellular Jail of Andaman and Nicobar Islands; also called the ‘Kala Pani’. From his prison cell; he sent his poems to the mainland; memorized by the prisoners who were released.
An inspiring biography of a true nationalist.

Vinayak Damodar Savarkar: The Much-maligned and Misunderstood Revolutionary and Freedom Fighter

Y. G. Bhave
Northern Book Centre, 2009 - Nationalists - 106 pages

Some men are born great. Some are made great. Some are denied greatness in their life time.

Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, the doyen of Indian Revolutionaries and a front-rank freedom fighter belongs to the third category.Whether as a social revolutionary, or political revolutionary or politician Savarkar was always firm by his convictions. Despite suffering ignominy at the hands of his own undeserving brethren Savarkar kept the flame of true nationalism burning. The book not only gives us details about the various achievements of Savarkar in various fields of social, revolutionary and political life but also in the field of poetry and literature. This book fully dispels all doubts, apprehensions, misconceptions and misunderstanding about this Great Son of Mother India who sacrificed his present to mould the future of his country. Power politics makes mischevous attempts to malign this peerless patriot. But truth has already started dawning and all the clouds eclipsing the multi-dimentional personality of Veer Savarkar have started dispersing and the bright sun of his name and fame will soon illuminate the political sky of India that is Bharat.Read this book to appreciate Savarkar's real worth.

Motivating Thoughts of Veer Savarkar

Taniya Sachdeva
Prabhat Prakashan, 01-Jan-2020 - Self-Help

Though the writings of Savarkar and the commentaries on these writings exist in bulk; it was important to produce a book that introduces and offers the important ideas of Savarkar to this generation of readers and scholars in a concise and categorised form. This book is an attempt in this direction of educating the readers about the ideas and philosophies of a great twentieth century thinker which would also pave the way for developing a better understanding of the varying strands of contemporary political thoughts and also in terms of understanding the critical relationship that is shared between identity and collective political struggles.

Veer Savarkar was a multidimensional personality - a freedom fighter, social reformer, writer, political thinker – Vice president

Veer Savarkar’s crusade against caste discrimination remains under-appreciated

There are several aspects of this great revolutionary, reformer and visionary which demand greater attention. Being an ideologue of Hindu philosophy is just one aspect of his life.

N. Chandrababu Naidu - Biography

Naidu was born in Naravari Palle, Chittoor district on April 20, 1950. Naidu attended primary school in Seshapuram until class five and the Chandragiri Government High School until class nine. He went to Tirupati and studied  there from class 10 until he received his master's degree. Naidu completed his BA degree in 1972. Got an  MA in economics in 1974. In 1974, he began work towards a PhD on the topic of  the economic ideas of N. G. Ranga. Naidu did not complete his PhD, as he got involved in politics.

Naidu entered politics as a youth leader from Chandragiri. During the Emergency he was appointed Pulicherla Youth Congress president. He received a Congress ticket in 1978 elections h from the Chandragiri constituency and he was elected to the Andhra Pradesh assembly. He became Minister of Technical Education and Cinematography in T. Anjaiah's cabinet. at age 28 and became  the state's youngest assembly member and minister.

Telugu film hero, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) proposed marriage to Naidu with  his daughter Bhuvaneswari and a large wedding was held in Madras.

In  1982,  NTR  created the Telugu Desam Party. Naidu remained in the Congress Party, standing again in the Chandragiri constituency against TDP candidate Venkatarama Naidu. The TDP swept the election. The Indian National Congress suffered its first defeat in the state since independence. Naidu joined the TDP after his defeat. Naidu became NTR's trusted lieutenant. When Nadendla Bhaskara Rao staged a coup against NTR in August 1984, Naidu helped his father-in-law regain power by rallying the MLAs before the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan and NTR appointed Naidu general secretary of the party. He began playing an important role in the TDP after Rao's coup attempt.

NTR opted for mid-term elections after regaining the chief ministry.  Naidu slowly gained power in the TDP.
In the 1989 Assembly elections, Naidu stood in his native constituency of Kuppam and won by a slender margin of about 5,000 votes. The Congress Party regained power in the 1989 state elections.  Naidu was a member of the opposition.

In 1994 the TDP regained power.  Naidu became Finance and Revenue Minister in NTR's cabinet. On 23 August 1995, Naidu engineered an internal party coup against NTR in the name of saving  the party. He became Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh on 1 September 1995, and was chosen Telugu Desam Party president. NTR's sons, actors Nandamuri Harikrishna and Nandamuri Balakrishna, and son-in-law Daggubati Venkateswara Rao supported Naidu in the coup.

As chief minister, Naidu advocated short-term sacrifice to turn Andhra Pradesh into an Asian tiger over the next 20 years. He slashed food subsidies (among other things), and raised power tariffs.

CNN and Time gave Naidu widespread coverage; CNN said "In just five years, he has turned an impoverished, rural backwater place into India's new information-technology hub", and Time magazine named him South Asian of the Year. Naidu was the West's favourite Indian; Tony Blair and Bill Clinton visited him in Hyderabad, the state capital, and the Governor of Illinois proclaimed Naidu Day in his honour.

Naidu produced a vision statement, "Vision 2020", with US consultants McKinsey & Company which proposed:

Universal, low-cost education and healthcare
Rural employment
Replacement of small investors with large corporations

In 1999 election, The Telugu Desam Party, led by Naidu, won a majority in the state legislature: 185 of 294 seats in the Assembly and 29 of 42 in the 1999 general election, making it the second-largest party in the BJP-led NDA coalition government.

Hyderabad was developed during Naidu's rule. Naidu said, "If you want to develop a state, you have to make its main cities a showpiece." Hyderabad is the capital of Andhra Pradesh.  Coining the slogan "Bye-bye Banglore, hello Hyderabad", Microsoft Corporation has established a software-development centre in Hyderabad, the second such centre outside Seattle. Naidu encouraged other global IT companies (IBM, Dell, Deloitte, Computer Associates and Oracle) to move to Hyderabad, making presentations to global CEOs convincing them to invest in his state.

On 1 October 2003 Naidu survived a land-mine blast, escaping with a fractured left collarbone and hairline fractures of two right ribs. The blast occurred about 16:00 IST when Naidu was travelling in a convoy to the Lord Venkateswara temple in the Tirumala hills for the annual Brahmotsavam festival.

In 2004 elections, the Telugu Desam Party (led by Naidu) failed to retain power. It won only  47 of 294 seats in the state assembly and five of 42 in the Lok Sabha.

According to Naidu, the 2004 election loss was primarily due to a severe drought and anti-incumbency sentiment. However, he was seen to have ignored the large rural population with his policies, failing to reach poorer voters. Years of drought and increasing debt have increased the suicide rate.

2014
For the assembly and lok sabha election taking place in Andhra Pradesh in two to be separated states - Seemandhra and Telangana, Naidu's TDP is contesting in alliance with BJP.

12 May 2014 Municipal election results were announced in Andhra Pradesh, and the Telugu Desam Party won large number of municipalities and corporations. Does it mean a big victory in Assembly and Lok Sabha elections also. Prakash Javadekar thinks so.

Bharat Ratna Nobel Laureate C.V. Raman - Biography and Contribution

C. V. Raman was born on 7 November 1888 in his maternal grandfather's house, in a small village of Thiruvanaikaval near Tiruchirapalli (Trichonopoly in 1888), on the bank's of Kaveri in Tamil Nadu. Raman's maternal grandfather Saptarshi Sastri was a great Sanskrit scholar.

Raman's father was  R. Chandrasekhara Iyer.  He became a lecturer in mathematics and physics in Mrs. A.V. Narasimha Rao College, Vishakapatnam (then Vizagapatnam) in Andhra Pradesh. Raman passed his matriculation examination at the age of 11 and he passed his F.A. examination (equivalent to today's Intermediate) with a scholarship at 13. In 1903 Raman joined the Presidency College in Chennai (then Madras) from where he passed the B.A. (1904) and M.A. (1907) examinations. He stood first both in B.A. and M.A. examinations and won all the prizes available. Raman himself wrote : " I finished my school and college career and my university examination at the age of eighteen."

While Raman was a student, he independently undertook original investigations in acoustics and optics. Raman was the first student of the Madras Presidency College to get a research paper published, that too in a prestigious international journal. His first paper on 'unsymmetrical diffraction bands due to a rectangular aperture' was published in the Philosophical Magazine (London) in November 1906. This was the result of Raman's measuring the angles of a prism using an ordinary spectrometer in his college. This was followed by a note in the same journal on a new experimental method of measuring surface tension. Lord Rayleigh (1842-1919) took note of the papers published by Raman as a student. Rayleigh was an outstanding mathematical physicist and a good experimenter, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for the discovery of argon. Raman and Rayleigh exchanged some correspondence.

Despite his brilliance in scientific investigations, at the instance of his father Raman took the Financial Civil Service (FCS) examination. He stood first in the examination and in the middle of 1907 Raman proceeded to Kolkata (then Calcutta) to join the Indian Finance Department as Assistant Accountant General. He was then 18½ years old. His starting salary was Rs. 400 per month, a fabulous sum in those days. One day while going to office Raman saw a signboard with the words "Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science" written on it. The address was 210, Bowbazar Street. On his way back he came to the Association where he first met an individual named Ashutosh Dey (Ashu Babu) who was to be Raman's assistant for 25 years. Ashu Babu took Raman to the Honorary Secretary of the Association, Amrit Lal Sircar, who was overjoyed when he came to know about Raman's intention -- to do research at the Association's laboratory. Raman started working in the laboratory of the association.

There was an interruption to Raman's work at the Association. He was transferred to Rangoon (1909) and Nagpur (1910). However, Raman's research work was not completely stopped. At both places he converted his home into a laboratory and continued his work. He came back to Calcutta in 1911.

Till 1917 Raman continued his research at the Association in his spare time. Doing research in his spare time and that too with very limited facilities Raman could publish his research findings in leading international journals like Nature, The Philosophical Magazine and Physics Review. During this period he published 30 original research papers. His research carried during this period mainly centred on areas of vibrations and acoustics. He studied a number of musical instruments viz., ectara, violin, tambura, veena, mridangam, tabla etc. He published a monograph on his extensive studies on the violin. The monograph was titled 'On the Mechanical Theory of Vibrations of Musical Instruments of the Violin Family with Experimental Verifications of the Results Part- I'. Ashu Babu was his collaborator at the association laboratory and he was a joint author in many papers that Raman published. Ashu Babu was also the sole author of a paper published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society of London.

In 1917 Raman was invited by Asutosh Mookerjee (1864-1924), to be a professor in the newly established Science College.   Raman was offered the Palit Professorship in Physics. The salary for the professorship was about half the amount that Raman was getting in the Finance Department. However, Raman happily accepted the offer. He joined the Calcutta University as Palit Professor in July 1917. In 1919 Raman took research students for the first time.

Even after joining the Calcutta University,  Raman continued his work at the Association's Laboratories. In fact the Association became the research arm of the University. Following the death of Amrit Lal Sircar in 1919 Raman was elected as Honorary Secretary of the Association, the post he held till 1933, when he left Kolkata.

Raman discovered Raman Effect in 1928. The first paper was published in the Indian Journal of Physics on 31 March 1928. He discovered that when light traverses a transparent material, some of the deflected light changes in wavelength and amplitude. This phenomenon of scattering of light was named after him – Raman effect. He was given the Nobel Prize for Raman Effect in 1930. In his, Nobel prize address Raman described various experiments carried out by him and his colleagues in Calcutta University in the area of light and colours. He got the inspiration for this area of research by looking at the blue Mediterranean sea on his voyage to England.

Bharat Ratna C.V. Raman - The Scientist Who Brought Great Glory to India
_______________

_______________

In 1933,  Raman was voted out of the Honorary Secretaryship of the Association in a move supported by Meghnad Saha. So Raman decided to move to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, to become its Director. He was the first Indian to become its Director. Raman succeeded Sir Martin Forster, FRS. He served IISc both as  Director during 1933-1937  and aS head of the Physics Department during 1933-1948.

When Raman joined IISc its academic accomplishments were not very high. But its funding position was much better than Calcutta University where Raman worked. Raman brought out the following changes:

A new physics department came into existence
Some of the existing departments were reorganised
Steps were initiated to establish a central workshop for fabricating precision instruments.
The surroundings were improved by planting beautiful flowering gardens.

For achieving academic excellence he himself gathered a team of talented students and faculty and started high quality research in many fields of physics like quantum mechanics, crystal chemistry and vitamins and enzyme chemistry by recruiting outstanding faculty. But his activities were not to the liking of some faculty members who complained and a committee was appointed to investigate the affairs. The committee gave the opinion criticising Raman. Raman resigned from the Director's position and remained a professor and head till 1948.

After retirement from the Institute he concentrated his attention on  building the Raman Research Institute (RRI).  Raman had to gather money for building the Institute as Raman had lost most of his life's savings including his Nobel Prize money in an investment. The Institute was built on a ten acre plot of land gifted by the Maharajah of Mysore way back in 1934  to the Indian Academy of Sciences, and for its related activities.  The Indian Academy of Sciences Bangalore, which now publishes some of the best science journals in the country, was established by Raman. The Academy was formed on April 27, 1934. It was registered in Bangalore under the Societies Registration Act. Besides Raman, there were 160 Foundation Fellows. The inaugural meeting of the Academy was held in the campus of Indian Institute of Science in August 1934.

Raman traveled extensively for raising donation for constructing the building for housing the institute. To earn money for the institute he started a few chemical industries (in association with one of his former students). The dividends from these industries were sufficient to support the institute to start with. He gifted away most of his personal properties to the Academy for the benefit of the institute, as also the Lenin Peace Prize money. A museum was built to house Raman's collection of crystals, gems, minerals, rock specimens, shells, stuffed birds, butterflies and so on.

Raman was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1954.

Raman died on November 21, 1970. As per his desire he was cremated in the gardens of his institute.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India was born at Allahabad on 14 November 1889. He parents were Motilal Nehru and Swarup Rani. From the age of 15 to 23 Jawaharlal studied in England at Harrow, Cambridge and the Inner Temple. He  returned to India in 1912.

After returning to India in August 1912, Nehru enrolled himself as an advocate of the Allahabad High Court. But he did not relish the practice of law.  His involvement in nationalist politics gradually replaced his legal practice over a period.

Nehru had developed an interest in Indian politics during his time in Britain. He had attended the  annual session of the Indian National Congress in Patna.  He came forward in support of the Indian civil rights movement in South Africa. He collected funds for the civil rights campaigners led by Mohandas Gandhi in 1913. Later, he further campaigned against the indentured labour and other such discriminations faced by Indians in various British colonies.

During  the First World War, Nehru confessed that he viewed the war with mixed feelings. Nehru had some  sympathy for France, whose culture he greatly admired. During the war, Nehru volunteered for the St John Ambulance and worked as one of the provincial secretaries of the organisation in Allahabad. Nehru spoke out against the censorship acts passed by the British government in India.
Nehru emerged from the war years as a leader whose political views were considered radical.  Nehru had spoken "openly of the politics of non-cooperation, of the need of resigning from honorary positions under the government and of not continuing the futile politics of representation. Nehru, however, was not satisfied with the pace of the national movement. He became involved with aggressive nationalists leaders who were demanding Home Rule for Indians.

In 1915. anti-moderate leaders such as Annie Besant and Lokmanya Tilak took the opportunity to call for a national movement for Home Rule. But, in 1915, the proposal was rejected. Annie Besant nevertheless formed a league for advocating Home Rule in 1916; and Tilak, on his release from a prison term, had in April 1916 formed his own league. Nehru joined both leagues but worked especially for the former. He remarked later that Besant had a very powerful influence on me in my childhood and that continued during his early days in politics. Hindu-Muslim unity was taken up as an important issue with the Lucknow pact at the annual meeting of the Congress in December 1916.  Nehru welcomed the unity initiative  between the two Indian communities.

Home rule league under the leadership of Annie Besant voiced a demand for self-government, the status of a Dominion within the British Empire as enjoyed by Australia, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and Newfoundland at the time. Nehru actively participated in the movement and rose to become secretary of Besant's All India Home Rule League. In June 1917 Besant was arrested and interned by the British government. The Congress and various other Indian organisation threatened to launch protests if she were not set free. The British government was subsequently forced to release Besant and make significant concessions after a period of intense protests.

The first big national involvement of Nehru came at the onset of the non-co-operation movement in 1920. He led the movement in the United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh). Nehru was arrested  in 1921, and was released a few months later. In the rift that formed within the Congress following the sudden closure of the non-co-operation movement after the Chauri Chaura incident, Nehru did not join the Swaraj Party formed by his father Motilal Nehru and CR Das.

Jawaharlal Nehru as Prime Minister of Independent India

Jawaharlal Nehru was the Prime Minister of India for 17 long years right from independence and can rightly be called the architect of modern India as he worked as the chairman of planning commission and came out with number of five year plans.  He encouraged Panjayati Raj institutions.

With the foresight of a statesman he created institutions like Planning Commission, National Science Laboratories and laid the foundation of a vast public sector for developing infrastructure for industrial growth. He also wanted the  the private sector to grow. He emphasized the need of planned development. Nehru gave a clear direction to India’s role in the comity of nations with the policy of non alignment and the principle of Panchsheel, the five principles of peaceful coexistence at a time when the rivalries of cold-war were driving the humanity to its doom. His vision was that of extensive application of science and technology and industrialisation for better living and liberation from the clutches of poverty, superstition and ignorance. Education to him was very important for internal freedom and fearlessness.  He was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1955. He never forgot India's great cultural heritage and liked to combine tradition with modernity.

Jawaharlal was a prolific writer in English and wrote a number of books like ‘The Discovery of India’, ‘Glimpses of World History’, his autobiography, ‘towards Freedom' (1936) ran nine editions in the first year alone. Emotional sensitivity and intellectual passion infused his writings, giving them unusual appeal & topicality.

Pandit Nehru loved children and they call him affectionately as Chacha Nehru. His birthday is observed as Children's Day. He believed that children are the future of the nation. Nehru passed away in 1964.

This work also traces the history of the freedom movement in India.Nehru was the most remarkable statesman, a man who enthralled everyone with his magical personality; a leader who was literally hero-worshipped during his time and an orator of the order, who, once he climbed the rostrum and took the microphone in his hand, became one with the audience and held them spellbound.
