Ancient Indian ideas and ideals are not antagonistic to universal well-being (Ekatma Manav Darshan)

The concept of nation that present Indians talk of comes from the ancient idea of Bharat Varsh, that includes  territorial description and cultural description with Sanatan Dharma as the foundation.

Golwalkar’s conception of Hind Rashtra, the ideal for this territory is not theocracy. Rather it it can be branded as “Dharmocracy”. He emphasizes Dharma-centricity of Indian cultural ethos. Dharma is a very comprehensive concept enriched by several ideas and ideals, customs, traditions and practices which are beneficial to individual, society and world at large.

He spearheaded one of the strongest religious, cultural and social organizations of the world making determined efforts to inculcate in its followers a burning devotion to India and its ancient national ethos. He tried to kindle in them the spirit of dedication, moral character, service to society and its security.. He strived to arouse social consciousness, mutual goodwill, love and cooperation among them all and made them realize that castes, sects, languages etc. are secondary and the concept of the nation is supreme. People should not do anything that injures the nation and its spirit.  Thus he tried to inculcate in them behavior that strengthens the spirit of national consciousness in every Indian.

A Hindu, to sum up the conclusions arrived at, is he who looks upon the land that extends from Sindhu to Sindhu, from the Indus to the seas, as the land of his forefathers, his pitrabhu, who inherited the blood of that race whose first discernible source is traced to the Vedic Saptasindhus, which, on its onward march, assimilated much that was incorporated and ennobling. The Hindus, who inherited and claimed as their own the culture of that race, as expressed chiefly in their common classic language, Sanskrit, and represented by a common history, a common literature, art and architecture, law and jurisprudence, rites and rituals, ceremonies and sacraments, fairs and festivals, and who, above all, address this land, this Sindhustan, as their punyabhu, as the holy land, the land of their saints and seers, of godmen and gurus, the land of piety and pilgrimage. These are the essentials of Hindutva – a common rashtra, a common jaati, and a common sanskriti. All these essentials could best be summed up by stating in brief that they are Hindu to whom Sindhustan is not only a pitrabhu but also a punyabhu.

Biography by Dhananjay Keer

Swatantrya Veer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was born on Monday, the 28th May 1883, at 10 p.m. at Bhagur, a village near Nasik.

While a junior high-school student, his article on ‘ The Glory of Hindusthan’ appeared in two parts as an editorial in the local paper, Nasik Vaihhav.

After many varied discussions Vinayak won Paranjpe’s followers over to his side, administered to themthe vow, and formed a Patriots’ Group of three members. This Group, established in 1899, soon assumed the shape of a Friends’ Union called ‘ Mitra Mela ’ at the beginning of 1900. Chosen youths of merit and mettle were secretly initiated into this fold.  The Mitra Mela sprouted into the world-famous Abhinava Bharat in 1904, its network was spread over Western and Central India and subsequently its branches in the form of the Ghadr Party resounded in England, France, Germany, America, Hong-Kong, Singapore and Burma with their heroic deeds and risings like the Komagata Maru episode. The aimand ideal of the Mitra Mela was absolute political Independence of India, and it emphatically asserted that such an independence could be won, if need be, by an armed revolt. Its watchward was instruction and insurrection.

At Ferguson College,  a Savarkar group was formed. This band of purposeful youths captured almost all departments of the college institutions from the Dining Club to the Library. It was a patriots’ group, studious, thoughtful, sober, aspiring and yet greatly obliging. The group started a hand-written weekly named the Aryan Weekly, in which Savarkar often wrote illuminating articles on patriotism, literature, history and science with ease and elegance. Some of the thought-provoking articles from this weekly found their way even into local weeklies and newspapers of Poona. One of those brilliant articles of Savarkar was “ Saptapadi ” in which he had dealt with the seven stages of evolution that have to be gone through by a subject nation.

While at college he had convened in 1904 a meeting of some two hundred selected members of the Mitra Mela. In an atmosphere fueled with grandeur and religiosity, the name of the Revolutionary Party was changed from the Mitra Mela to the Abhinava Bharat. Now the party  girded up its loins to extend its political and revolutionary activities and influence, spread its net all over India, and assume the responsibility of a revolution on an all-Bharat scale.

About this time news came to India that Pandit Shyamji Krishna Varnia, then resident of London, offered scholarships for Indian students desiring to study in Europe. Giving a brief sketch of his career Savarkar proceeds in his application : “ Independence and Liberty I look upon as the very pulse and breath of nation. From my boyhood, dear sir, upto this moment of my youth, the loss of Independence of my country- and the possibility of regaining it form the only theme of which I dreamt by night and on which I mused by day.”

Pandit Shyamji Krishna Verma signed  an agreement before Tilak and awared Savarkar  a sum of Rs. 400 through him as the first instalment of the Shivaji Scholarship. His comrades and devotees gave him in Bombay a hearty sendoff on June 9, 1906, and the steamer Persia, left Bombay on her great voyage with the prince of Indian Revolutionaries on her deck for the consummation of his great vision, great aim and great deeds.

Savarkar reached London in the first week of July 1906, and took his lodgings at the India House founded by Pandit Shyamji Krishna Varma. In due course Savarkar was admitted to Gray’s Inn, one of the four Iims of Court in London, Pandit Shyamji, had established a Home Rule Society and the India House during the first quarter of 1905. 

In 1907 he entrusted the management of the India House entirely to Savarkar and left for Paris.

In Port Blair jail, Savarkar persuaded the prisoners to write their letters in the provincial languages or conveniently in Hindi and to write their complaints, answers, or applications in Hindi so that the necessity and urgency of Nagari-knowing Munshis should be felt increasingly. The effect was tremendous. Formerly ninety per cent of the letters from and to the Andamans were in Urdu, a few years after the arrival of Savarkar the tables were turned and the ratio was in the reverse order. Some distinguished prisoners from the Punjab, who had composed their poetry in Urdu, got themselves accustomed to the Nagari Hindi and re-wrote their poems in Hindi

N. Chandrababu Naidu - Biography

Naidu was born in Naravari Palle, Chittoor district on April 20, 1950. Naidu attended primary school in Seshapuram until class five and the Chandragiri Government High School until class nine. He went to Tirupati and studied  there from class 10 until he received his master's degree. Naidu completed his BA degree in 1972. Got an  MA in economics in 1974. In 1974, he began work towards a PhD on the topic of  the economic ideas of N. G. Ranga. Naidu did not complete his PhD, as he got involved in politics.

Naidu entered politics as a youth leader from Chandragiri. During the Emergency he was appointed Pulicherla Youth Congress president. He received a Congress ticket in 1978 elections h from the Chandragiri constituency and he was elected to the Andhra Pradesh assembly. He became Minister of Technical Education and Cinematography in T. Anjaiah's cabinet. at age 28 and became  the state's youngest assembly member and minister.

Telugu film hero, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) proposed marriage to Naidu with  his daughter Bhuvaneswari and a large wedding was held in Madras.


In  1982,  NTR  created the Telugu Desam Party. Naidu remained in the Congress Party, standing again in the Chandragiri constituency against TDP candidate Venkatarama Naidu. The TDP swept the election. The Indian National Congress suffered its first defeat in the state since independence. Naidu joined the TDP after his defeat. Naidu became NTR's trusted lieutenant. When Nadendla Bhaskara Rao staged a coup against NTR in August 1984, Naidu helped his father-in-law regain power by rallying the MLAs before the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan and NTR appointed Naidu general secretary of the party. He began playing an important role in the TDP after Rao's coup attempt.

NTR opted for mid-term elections after regaining the chief ministry.  Naidu slowly gained power in the TDP.
In the 1989 Assembly elections, Naidu stood in his native constituency of Kuppam and won by a slender margin of about 5,000 votes.The Congress Party regained power in the 1989 state elections.  Naidu was a member of the opposition.


In 1994 the TDP regained power.  Naidu became Finance and Revenue Minister in NTR's cabinet. On 23 August 1995, Naidu engineered an internal party coup against NTR in the name of saving  the party. He became Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh on 1 September 1995, and was chosen Telugu Desam Party president. NTR's sons, actors Nandamuri Harikrishna and Nandamuri Balakrishna, and son-in-law Daggubati Venkateswara Rao supported Naidu in the coup.

As chief minister, Naidu advocated short-term sacrifice to turn Andhra Pradesh into an Asian tiger over the next 20 years. He slashed food subsidies (among other things), and raised power tariffs.

CNN and Time gave Naidu widespread coverage; CNN said "In just five years, he has turned an impoverished, rural backwater place into India's new information-technology hub", and Time magazine named him South Asian of the Year. Naidu was the West's favourite Indian; Tony Blair and Bill Clinton visited him in Hyderabad, the state capital, and the Governor of Illinois proclaimed Naidu Day in his honour.

Naidu produced a vision statement, "Vision 2020", with US consultants McKinsey & Company which proposed:

Universal, low-cost education and healthcare
Rural employment
Replacement of small investors with large corporations



In 1999 election, The Telugu Desam Party, led by Naidu, won a majority in the state legislature: 185 of 294 seats in the Assembly and 29 of 42 in the 1999 general election, making it the second-largest party in the BJP-led NDA coalition government.

Hyderabad was developed during Naidu's rule. Naidu said, "If you want to develop a state, you have to make its main cities a showpiece." Hyderabad is the capital of Andhra Pradesh.  Coining the slogan "Bye-bye Banglore, hello Hyderabad", Microsoft Corporation has established a software-development centre in Hyderabad, the second such centre outside Seattle. Naidu encouraged other global IT companies (IBM, Dell, Deloitte, Computer Associates and Oracle) to move to Hyderabad, making presentations to global CEOs convincing them to invest in his state.

On 1 October 2003 Naidu survived a land-mine blast, escaping with a fractured left collarbone and hairline fractures of two right ribs. The blast occurred about 16:00 IST when Naidu was travelling in a convoy to the Lord Venkateswara temple in the Tirumala hills for the annual Brahmotsavam festival.

In 2004 elections, the Telugu Desam Party (led by Naidu) failed to retain power. It won only  47 of 294 seats in the state assembly and five of 42 in the Lok Sabha.

According to Naidu, the 2004 election loss was primarily due to a severe drought and anti-incumbency sentiment. However, he was seen to have ignored the large rural population with his policies, failing to reach poorer voters. Years of drought and increasing debt have increased the suicide rate.

2014
For the assembly and lok sabha election taking place in Andhra Pradesh in two to be separated states - Seemandhra and Telangana, Naidu's TDP is contesting in alliance with BJP.

12 May 2014 Municipal election results were announced in Andhra Pradesh, and the Telugu Desam Party won large number of municipalities and corporations. Does it mean a big victory in Assembly and Lok Sabha elections also. Prakash Javadekar thinks so.

2014 Assembly Elections

Telugu Desam Party under the leadership Chandrababu Naidu won the assembly elections in the Andhra Pradesh State and Naidu became the chief minister. The residuary state if formed with a big deficit to start with. Centre has promised to make good the deficit. Naidu has taken up the leadership of the state at a challenging time. He is promising all round development of the state in various cities and towns of A.P. this time instead of concentrating on only one urban area. The Hyderabad experience is a big lesson to all states.

2019 Assembly Elections

Y. Jaganmohan Reddy, YSR Congress Party won the election. Naidu spent five years as opposition leader. He was even jailed for some time.

2024 Assembly Elections

Naidu has entered into alliance with BJP and Jana Sena for this election.
