 Thane City - History

The existence of Thane city appears in the global history since the 9th century A.D. The city was then known as Shreesthanak. It was more popularly known as the Capital of the Shilahar dynasty. The history of Thane city can be broadly categorized into 5 eras.
1. Vedic period to 1300 A.D. : Comprising of Hindu or ancient period,
Aparant , Shilahar and Bimba Dynasty.

2. 1300 –1660 A.D. : Mohamedan and Portuguese Rule.
3. 1660-1800 A.D. : Maratha and Portuguese Rule.
4. 1800-1947 A.D. : British Rule.
5. 1947-till date : Post Independence Thane.
‘Aparant’ is the ancient name of the geographical area hosting Thane city. During the Indian expedition of the Greek Emperor Alexander, a number of philosophers, historians and geographists visited India. Among them a Greek historian ‘Tolemi’ has mentioned about the city of Thane in his writings. A famous sailor named Marcopolo had also visited Thane in 1290 A.D. and noted it to be one of the best cities in the world. A place called ‘Ghodbunder’ was famous for horse trading thus deriving its name from the word ghoda i.e. horse and bunder meaning port. During this period a fabric called ‘Tansi’ was exported from Thane. During the period from 13 A.D. to 17 A.D., the Muslims, Portuguese, Marathas, & the British dynasties ruled Thane. From 810 A.D. to 1260 A.D. the Shilahar Dynasty ruled over Thane.
The Emperors of Shilahar dynasty were disciples of Lord Shiva and the Kopineshwar Temple has been built during their reign. During this period, due to the secular attitude and tolerance of Shilahars towards different religions, a large number of people from different communities like Parsis , Christians, Muslims and Jews settled down in Thane, thus sowing seeds of a cosmopolitan city.
At this time the Shilahars also divided the city into different sections and named them as ‘padas’. It is seen that these padas exist even today by names of Naupada, Patlipada, Agripada etc.
In the earlier part of the 12th Century A.D. with a view to create a new township, King Bimbadev, along with 66 segments of his community came over and settled in Thane. In 1480 A.D. ‘Sultan Mehmood’ of Gujarat made Thane the Capital of his ‘Subha’ Province.
St. John the Baptist Church was constructed in Thane in 1663 A.D. The construction work of famous Thane Killa (Fort) was started in 1730 A.D. In 1737 A.D. Chimaji Appa the Maratha Sardar planned the ‘Conquest of Vasai’ and on 28th March, 1738 the Marathas conquered the Thane Killa. The fort is presently being used as ‘Thane Central Jail’.
The Portuguese ruled Thane for over 200 years from 1530 to 1739 A.D. During this period Thane was known as “Kalabe De Tana”. In the year 1744 the British conquered Thane city along with its fort.

The famous Kopineshwar Temple was renovated in the year 1760. In 1778 the palatial residence of the Peshwas was converted into the Court building. In the year 1780 Keshavji Sorabji Rustomji Patel constructed the first Parsi Agyari in Thane. The first District Court was established in the year 1803 A.D. The Thane Borough Municipality was established on 10th March 1863.

The first ever railway train was started on 16th April, 1853 from Boribunder to Thane, giving Thane the honour of hosting an event of historical importance in the city. In the year 1880 the Thane Borough Municipality spent Rs. 12,960/- on construction of the Pokharan Lake, to make use of the lake water for drinking purpose. The first elections of the Municipality were conducted in the year 1885.

The first newspaper in Thane was launched in the year 1866. Different Marathi magazines like Arunodaya, Survodaya, Vakilancha Sathi, Nyaylahari, Manohar, Dyanapradip, Dyanadipika were seen to be in circulation thus showing the importance of the print media during that period.

The first census took place in the year 1881 and the population of Thane at the time was 14,456. The Jain temple of Thane was built in the year 1879. The first ever English medium school was started in 1821 and was named as ‘Thane English School’. In the year 1893, the first Marathi Library was established. In June 1897 Lokmanya Tilak visited Thane. On 19th April, 1910 noted freedom fighters like Veer Anant Laxman Kanhere, Gopal Krishnaji Karve & Vinayak Narayan Deshpande were hanged till death in the Central Jail for killing the then Nasik District Collector Jackson. In 1938 noted freedom fighter Veer Savarkar was felicitated by the citizens of Thane after his release from the British confinement. In 1920 a road near Masunda lake was named after Dr. F.A. Moose for the commemorative service during the epidemic of plague.

Humanism in Business
Heiko Spitzeck
Cambridge University Press, Feb 26, 2009 - 438 pages

What is the purpose of our economic system? What would a more life-serving economy look like? There are many books about business and society, yet very few of them question the primacy of GDP growth, profit maximization and individual utility maximization. Even developments with a humanistic touch like stakeholder participation, corporate social responsibility or corporate philanthropy serve the same goal: to foster long-term growth and profitability. Humanism in Business questions these assumptions and investigates the possibility of creating a human-centered, value-oriented society based on humanistic principles. An international team of academics and practitioners present philosophical, spiritual, economic, psychological and organizational arguments that show how humanism can be used to understand, and possibly transform, business at three different levels: the systems level, the organizational level and the individual level. This groundbreaking book will be of interest to academics, practitioners and policymakers concerned with business ethics and the relationship between business and society.

Philosophical Humanism and Contemporary India
V.P. Varma
Motilal Banarsidass Publ., Jul 1, 2006 - 211 pages

An attempt has been made in this book to reconstruct idealist humanist philosophy on the basis of Eastern and Western metaphysics and the natural sciences. It supports the basic principle of ethical absolutism as opposed to relativism. It analysis the fundamental principles of humanist political thought with reference to sovereignty, obligation and rights. It is hoped that policy-makers and planers in the developing countries will find here an integral world-view and exposition of concrete technics to meet the challanges of the hour.

The Saffron Wave: Democracy and Hindu Nationalism in Modern India

Thomas Blom Hansen
Princeton University Press, Mar 23, 1999 - 304 pages
https://books.google.co.in/books?id=SAqn3OIGE54C&q=

The rise of strong nationalist and religious movements in postcolonial and newly democratic countries alarms many Western observers. In The Saffron Wave, Thomas Hansen turns our attention to recent events in the world's largest democracy, India. Here he analyzes Indian receptivity to the right-wing Hindu nationalist party and its political wing, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which claims to create a polity based on "ancient" Hindu culture. Rather than interpreting Hindu nationalism as a mainly religious phenomenon, or a strictly political movement, Hansen places the BJP within the context of the larger transformations of democratic governance in India.

Hansen demonstrates that democratic transformation has enabled such developments as political mobilization among the lower castes and civil protections for religious minorities. Against this backdrop, the Hindu nationalist movement has successfully articulated the anxieties and desires of the large and amorphous Indian middle class. A form of conservative populism, the movement has attracted not only privileged groups fearing encroachment on their dominant positions but also "plebeian" and impoverished groups seeking recognition around a majoritarian rhetoric of cultural pride, order, and national strength. Combining political theory, ethnographic material, and sensitivity to colonial and postcolonial history, The Saffron Wave offers fresh insights into Indian politics and, by focusing on the links between democracy and ethnic majoritarianism, advances our understanding of democracy in the postcolonial world.

Mumbai 2015 - Prospects and Challenges

Vision Mumbai - 2013 - McKinsey - Bombay First Report

http://www.visionmumbai.org/aboutusdocs/McKinseyReport.pdf

Was there a problem in Financing for Government?

The report said only Rs. 1,500 crore per year has to spent from taxes.

We estimate that a total public and private sector investment of Rs. 200,000 crore ($40 billion) will be
required over the next ten years.

However, of this, only Rs. 50,000 crore (i.e., around Rs. 5,000 crore per year) will need to be public investment, spent primarily on transport and housing.

The good news is that the Government will need to put in only around Rs. 1,500 crore per year or
Rs. 15,000 crore over the next ten years to finance the Rs. 50,000 crore, the rest coming from longterm
loans that can be financed based on user charges and increased tax collections.

We estimate that this Rs. 1,500 crore per year contributed by the tax-payers will attract private investments in housing, power, telecom and other key economic growth sectors such as manufacturing and services
to the tune of Rs. 150,000 crore over the next ten years, thus giving a 1:10 multiple.

Mumbai is India’s largest city (by population) in India and is the financial and commercial capital of the country. It generates 40% of the state’s GSDP and 6.16% of the national GDP.

The tertiary sector now contributes more than 75% to its economy. It has seen a steady shift upwards from 62.6% about 20 years ago to 73% in 2009. The city contributed nearly one-fourth to the state’s gross domestic product (GDP) of Rs 13,23,768 crore last year.

Mumbai contributes $209 billion (Rs.13.58 lakh crores at 1$ = Rs.65) to India's GDP. This estimate is according to purchasing power parity.

Maharashtra GDP for the year 2013-14 was given as RS. 14,76,233 crores (Wikipedia). If Mumbai contributes 40% of the state's GDP, the estimate of GDP for Mumbai would be    Rs. 5,90,493 crores. This figure also tallies with the estimate Mumbai's GDP in National GDP at 6.16%.

It  is also responsible for 25 percent of industrial output, 70 percent of maritime trade in India and 70 percent of capital transactions to the nation’s economy.

The city has manufacturing facilities in diverse sectors  from textiles to petrochemicals and serves as the  headquarters for many companies.

Mumbai, Thane and Pune continue to be the largest contributors to Maharashtra’s economy; together, they make up 46.8% of the Gross State Domestic Product, with individual contributions of 22.1%, 13.3% and 11.4% per cent respectively.

The major pillars of economic renewal of Mumbai would include Infrastructure, Industry, and Tourism.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Mumbai requires a plan to develop a “Comprehensive Mobility Plan” for entire Mumbai City which will help in the development of transportation network of all modes, and to achieve convenient
and cost effective accessibility to places of employment and education to people and for transport of goods produced to various places in the country and the world. It will also help in optimal utilization of funds and human resources.

The subarban rail network is the principal mode of mass transport in Mumbai. The  the launch of Metros and Mono-rail have improved travelling experience for Mumbaikars to a great extent.
Expenditure of Rs 3,108 crore was incurred in the road network against an outlay of Rs. 4,450 crore during 2013-14. In order to enhance better connectivity, for the first time a Master Plan for 3 years from 2013-16 is prepared.

In order to reduce congestion in Mumbai International Airport, an additional airport has been
proposed in four phases through PPP at Navi Mumbai with estimated cost of about 14,574 crore. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) along with Mumbai International Airport Ltd. has undertaken a
mega project to build new integrated terminal T2 for modernisation of Chhatrapati Shivaji
International Airport (CSIA), Mumbai. The project cost is 12,500 crore out of which expenditure incurred upto 31st December, 2014 was 11,401 crore.

The State has 720 km long coastline with two major ports, operated by Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). During 2014-15 up to December, MbPT and JNPT handled
461.66 lakh MT and 480.73 lakh MT cargo traffic respectively.

It has been decided to implement an Integrated Slum Development Programme (ISDP) to fill
the infrastructure gap for providing the necessary basic amenities to slum residents
Health care units need a boost in the economy and thus, ‘Dispensary Up gradation Programme’
has been undertaken, under which programme over 100 dispensaries have been given the necessary facelift and have been branded to ensure qualitative primary health care service delivery. Adequate provision for the construction of 15 new dispensaries has been proposed especially in slums.

Other Infrastructure facilities like Energy, Water Supply, Sewerage etc., are maintained
by respective authorities.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Out of India’s total exports, the share of IT products (mainly software) has increased from 1percent in the early 1990s, to 18 percent in last few years.  Despite competition from Bangalore, Mumbai has created a niche in the IT industry scenario of India, with a large number of multinationals as well
as small software units located here. The Santacruz Electronic Export Processing Zone (SEEPZ) and the International Infotech Park in Vashi, Navi Mumbai offer excellent facilities to IT companies.

FINANCIAL SECTOR

There is an immense potential for expanding this sector. Mumbai houses leading players in the
financial sector, SEBI, BSE and NSE. It has an overwhelming presence in money market
and foreign exchange market transactions. For promoting the International Finance Centre, however, the State Government needs to work with GoI. Mumbai accounts for a significant share
in deposits mobilization (14 percent of total deposits) and deployment of credit (21percent of total credit) of scheduled commercial banks. Its share in the forex market is as high as
four-fifths of the total turnover. The city is one of the world’s top centers of commerce in terms of financial flow. It is also home to important banks and non bank financial companies.

MSMEs

As on Jan 32, 2013 Mumbai has 15,565 MSME which contributes to 9.5% share of total MSMEs in Maharashtra and employs around 247,000 people.

Mumbai contributes about Rs. 40,000 crore in taxes to Maharashtra and the Centre annually. The
share of Mumbai in total revenue collection from metros is more than 50% in case of income tax and excise duty. Mumbai contributes to 33% of income tax collections, 60% of custom duty collections,
20% of central excise tax collections,

TOURISM
The Indian tourism has emerged as one of the key drivers of growth among the services sector in India. As Mumbai holds so much of diversity into it, people from all over the world come here to visit places like Lonavala, Matheran, Nasik etc. Thus, tourism is an employment generator; which is a significant source of foreign exchange for the Mumbai and an economic activity that helps local and
host communities. The travel and tourism sector directly contributed INR 1920 billion to India’s GDP in 2014 reflecting a growth CAGR of 14 per cent since 2007. This is forecasted to grow at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 12 per cent from the estimated INR 2222 billion in the year 2015
to INR 6818 billion by 2023.

All future development of Mumbia would result in travel of tourists for work/services. Tourism adds
to the overall economy of Mumbai and this influx of people into Mumbai needs to be tapped for tourism.

Mumbai's population will be more than 21 million by  2030. Its economy will be bigger than that of
Thailand or Hong Kong today. Mumbai has opportunity to transform itself into a world class city.
But presently,  only 47% of the sewage generated is treated, and the number of peak vehicles per lane kilometre is 170 compared to an ideal 112. The policy-makers should be concerned at
the decline in the number of establishments and the number of jobs they create and offer. New industries have to be promoted in Mumbai.  Newer industrial areas have to be developed within city to establish industries under Make in India programme.

With the vibrant economic profile, Mumbai offers several potential advantages and can leverage this existing potential for growth. To evolve as the regional finance center, to capitalize on the entertainment industry exports or the leather and gems & jewellery exports,

Mumbai has to change its course for supporting its economy and businesses and meet the challenges of transforming into a city offering world class infrastructure along with citizen friendly services.
The economic growth therefore needs to be carefully supported with linkages and reforms. It should be such that it encompasses all areas of economic activities which complement economic development. Policies and programmes have to be announced to facilitate investments in manufacturing sector once again and bring about development.

Mumbai must have policy to encourage vertical high rise factories to decrease land use for manufacturing and also has to insist that all residential housing accompanying the manufacturing facility has to be multistoried. Even guest houses etc. have to be in multistoried buildings.

Meter Jam - Mumbaikars' Protest Against Autos and Taxis

"Don't think we are not outraged with your malpractices."

Today I travelled from around half a kilometer before the auto stand of Mulund Check Naka on Highway and went up to Vihar Lake. The distance came to be 14.6 km and the fare to Rs. 169.

Two days back, I took an auto from Mulund Check Naka (Maharana Pratap Chowk) to vihar lake. The driver suggested that we will go via Highway. The meter showed 30 kms as the distance. Even the electronic meters are already spoiled by some autodrivers who are habitual offenders. One does not know when one comes across them, uses their service and suffers.

Do we need to milestones on the mumbai roads so that people can compare the distance showed on the milestones and distance shown by the auto and taxi meters?

Meter Jam Day in Mumbai - 12th August 2010

Recently auto and taxi fares have increased.

One strange phenomenon was noticed by me. The metre readings shown by many autos for the distance travelled by me many days regularly has increased. While in earlier days, it was around 5.0 in many days recently this number has gone up to 5.50 and above. What is the reason? The increase in fares led to more rigging of meters. Any body complaining? Any body listening? Many of the unions of autos and taxis are controlled by political leaders. There is hafta collection from these drivers. The hafta collection from drivers is mentioned by leading persons on big platforms in India. I heard about this from Mr. Gurcharan Das, former CEO, Proctor and Gamble, India when he addressed the students of NITIE, on occasion of Lakhya, an event for executives organized by NITIE Industrial Engineering students every year.

A group of young people have come forward to protest against this present practices in auto and taxi trade.

A call for METER JAM is given. Don't use these vehicles for a day and show your protest.

The call is given vide a web site  www.meterjam.com

The call is also available on facebook and twitter.

Inform your involvement in the protest, inform others, and do not use auto and taxi on 12th August.

Escalator at Thane Station - June 2013

Pleasantly surprised to see and use the escalator at Thane Station on 28.6.2013

Hopefully we are going to see more escalators in various railway stations of Mumbai city.
