Green Productivity in the Indonesian Leather Tanning Industry
Issue No.3, 2020

There are four main processes in tanneries—beamhouse, tanning, post-tanning, and finishing. Beamhouse and tanning consume large amounts of water. The beamhouse process consists of soaking, liming, fleshing, deliming, and pickling.

The tanning process consists of tanning and retanning.

Post-tanning processes include dyeing, fatliquoring, and fixation.

Finishing includes vacuum drying and toggling.

The seven sources of green waste identified by Wills (2009) were excessive use of energy, water, material, waste, transport, emissions, and damage to biodiversity.

ABSTRACT. Leather processings involved in isolation in pre-tanning stages generate large volumes of solid wastes and high strength wastewater which are major source of environmental pollution characterized by chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), chromium (III) and phenolics with high pH, strong odor and dark brown color. Leather industry wastewaters with high organic content and pollution load are generated from pre-tanning processes. Conventional pre-tanning process utilises chemicals which attributes to 50-60% of pollution load and alkaline effluent discharge of 70-80% toxicity.

In our study,  soaking, immunization and liming processes were carried out with reductive chemical additives and surfactants, fibre opening auxiliaries, enzyme based and enzyme assisted chemicals in the factories as an eco-friendly designed recipe. Studies were conducted in Bursa Leather Park, Turkey. The results revealed the advantages of time saving, cost effectivity and minimized pollution load compared to conventional process. Moreover, the designed process uses lower amount of alkaline chemicals and water, gives a very high quality pelts with open grain and yield in 50-55% lime split output with 2.2-2.4 mm thicknesses.

Sustainability in the Portuguese fashion accessory & footwear industry (case studies)

ABSTRACT. The Portuguese footwear produces high quality and high priced shoes.  It exports in a big way.  The main environmental impacts caused by this sector are at residues containing chromium in its composition, such as leather flaps and leather powder, which are difficult materials to degrade by the environment and therefore highly polluting.

There are some cases of good practice in the framework of sustainable strategies. This paper uses the case study research strategy of footwear brands and Portuguese accessories. The field study shows that the most commonly adopted sustainability principles are the choice of less polluting materials, less aggressive tanning leather, or even alternative materials.

New Leather Machinery for Productivity

Intelligent  Leather Cutting Machinery from Yancheng Golden Eagle Machinery Manufacturing Co, Ltd.

The company specializing in the production and processing of cutting machines, shaping machines and other products.

The machine can realize a variety of intelligent typesetting operations, and even the flaws on the leather material are used without waste on the seam or upper, and the precise size made by a skilled worker can be cut out in 6 minutes. This highly efficient leather intelligent cutting machine was independently developed by Golden Eagle Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd. worldwide.

Maximize the use of leather
A piece of irregular natural leather material needs to be transformed into a smooth upper by Emma CNC's intelligent cutting machine. It must first go through data scanning to make the traditional paper shoe plate into a CAD file, which is the electronic version of traditional cardboard. For traditional shoes, cardboard needs to be drawn by hand. There are only two ways to hide and cut leather materials. One is to compare with cardboard and cut it with scissors; the other is to cut it with a knife mold. Obviously, hand-cutting leather material has poor accuracy. Suppose,-A skilled worker completes 1,000 cardboards a day, then this worker's workload will be very large. If a knife mold is used for cutting, each newly designed shoe has a different shoe pattern. If there is no order for a certain shoe, the knife mold costing thousands of dollars will become useless. It can be seen that, whether it is cardboard or knife mold, the requirements for manpower are very high. The advantage of using the electronic version is that different cardboards can be drawn with a data scanner or with a cursor.

After the digitization of solid paperboard, it paved the way for more critical processes. The CAD document formed after scanning will be transmitted to the robot that really performs the cutting function. A high-definition digital camera with a tens of millions of pixels located above the robot will identify the defects carried by the natural leather itself, and then place the CAD file on the skin The typesetting operation is performed on the material, and the final typesetting is the optimal use plan obtained after tens of thousands of operations.

Through projection technology, CAD graphics reflect the shapes on the leather, and these shapes are seen in the stitches to make full use of the leather. This robot is the most subtle.

The place is to deal with the flaws, the flaws of the original leather are exactly at the seam, or the position of the wrapped foot.

Intelligent cutting in 6 minutes

Once the best utilization typesetting is released, it will be immediately transmitted to the cutting area. The two flexible robotic arms produce a unique sound effect when the robot is running. The rhythm of the left and right starts at the same time. The sharp blade at the end starts to cut the leather smoothly according to the instructions issued, and the leather surface of each shoe is just like this. Out.

Generally speaking, a skilled workerwho has been working for 6 years  can arrange on a piece of leather 10 pairs of shoes, while a novice can only arrange 8.5 pairs. It usually takes about five or six workers to spend an hour.

Survey on Intelligent Leather Nesting and Cutting Machine Technology
Abstract:
Intelligent leather cutting machine is one of the leather manufacturing equipment. It detects and extracts the feature of leather fabric, automatically optimizes leather nesting according to the requirements of the parts, and finally complete the production with CNC(Computerized Numerical Control)cutting. It is beneficial to improve the utilization rate of leather materials and production efficiency as well as reducing labors cost. Based on the development of intelligent leather nesting and cutting technology, this paper introduces the composition of leather cutting machine system, and summarizes and analyzes the leather intelligent nesting algorithm. In above, the trend of leather intelligent nesting and cutting technology is prospected.
