Bhur Bhuvah Svah

Tat Savitur Varenyam

Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi

Dhiyo Yo nah Prachodayat


Om: means God. Brahman (the creator).  The scripture says “Om Iti Ek Akshara Brahman” (Om that one syllable itself describes Brahman).

 Bhur, Bhuvah, Svah: Three worlds


Tat –  “that”, God of three worlds

Savitur – “Divine Sun” (The ultimate light of wisdom)

Varenyam – I adore 

Bhargo – capable of dispelling ignorance

Devasya – of God  (The God capable of dispelling ignorance)

Dheemahi – “We Contemplate”

Dhiyo – “Intellect”

Yo  – “Who”

Nah – “Ours”

Prachodayat – should increase


I adore the God of three worlds, Savitur. I contemplate on him who is capable of dispelling ignorance. He should increase and raise our intellect.


I adore (respect) the God of three worlds. My contemplation of the God who is capable of dispelling ignorance, which will increase my intellect.

सवितुः : ईश्वर अथवा सृष्टि कर्ता

वरेण्यम : पूजनीय

भर्गः: अज्ञान तथा पाप निवारक

देवस्य : ज्ञान स्वरुप भगवान का

धीमहि : हम ध्यान करते है

धियो : बुद्धि प्रज्ञा

योः : जो

नः : हमें

प्रचोदयात् : प्रकाशित करें।
