Meter Jam - Mumbaikars' Protest Against Autos and Taxis


"Don't think we are not outraged with your malpractices."

Today I travelled from around half a kilometer before the auto stand of Mulund Check Naka on Highway and went up to Vihar Lake. The distance came to be 14.6 km and the fare to Rs. 169.

Two days back, I took an auto from Mulund Check Naka (Maharana Pratap Chowk) to vihar lake. The driver suggested that we will go via Highway. The meter showed 30 kms as the distance. Even the electronic meters are already spoiled by some autodrivers who are habitual offenders. One does not know when one comes across them, uses their service and suffers.

Do we need to milestones on the mumbai roads so that people can compare the distance showed on the milestones and distance shown by the auto and taxi meters?

Meter Jam Day in Mumbai - 12th August 2010


Recently auto and taxi fares have increased.

One strange phenomenon was noticed by me. The metre readings shown by many autos for the distance travelled by me many days regularly has increased. While in earlier days, it was around 5.0 in many days recently this number has gone up to 5.50 and above. What is the reason? The increase in fares led to more rigging of meters. Any body complaining? Any body listening? Many of the unions of autos and taxis are controlled by political leaders. There is hafta collection from these drivers. The hafta collection from drivers is mentioned by leading persons on big platforms in India. I heard about this from Mr. Gurcharan Das, former CEO, Proctor and Gamble, India when he addressed the students of NITIE, on occasion of Lakhya, an event for executives organized by NITIE Industrial Engineering students every year.

A group of young people have come forward to protest against this present practices in auto and taxi trade.

A call for METER JAM is given. Don't use these vehicles for a day and show your protest.

The objective of the Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskar (V.R.P.) is to recognize the outstanding
contributions made by a worker or a group of workers in an organization covered under the
Factories Act, 1948, The Dock Workers (Safety, Health and Welfare) Act, 1986, The Building &

2014 Awards
For the Performance Year 2012, 142 applications were received for VRP, out of which 28 were awarded and these awards were shared by 126 winners. Awards which were given to employees from SAIL's five plants including Bhilai Steel Plant, Bokaro Steel Plant, Rourkela Steel Plant, Durgapur Steel Plant and Salem Steel Plant.  19 of the 28 awards were won by SAIL plants. 105 persons were involved in them out of the 126 winners.

It is noteworthy that the estimated annual savings resulting from implementation of works mentioned in SAIL's award winning projects are approximately over Rs 65 crores (Recurring) & Rs 7 crores (Non Recurring).


In the Prime Minister’s Shram Awards for 2012, SAIL had won 6 out of the 16 awards conferred on PSUs; notably SAIL employees constituted half of the total Shram awardees.

Solar Energy - India - Plans, Programs and Plants

Sirsa district in Haryana provided solar street lamps to all the 334 villages. Around 5000 lamps were installed at cost of Rs.12.85 crore. (appx.19,000 each)

A Government agency in Chennai is planning to deliver a solar atlas of India in two years. It will provide the location which will be optimal for location of solar plants. It will be helpful in the solar mission of India. It aims to install 20,000 MW solar power by 2022. In the present installed capacity of 1.9 lakh MW, solar accounts for only 100 MW.


Recently there were news items reporting that solar energy mission of India will achieve its targets.
Gujarat will shortly have 1000 MW of power from Solar.

Venture capitalists have raised $24.5 billion (Rs.1.1 trillion) for clean tech projects in India and 20% of it ($4.9 billion) may be earmarked for Solar projects. But only eight transactions for $100 million were done so far. There is promise in the sector and Venture capital firms have to money and are looking for attractive targets.

NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd.(NVVN) was appointed as the nodal agency for the phase 1 (2009-13) of JNNSM that envisages setting up the first 1000 MW capacity. A review meeting of various projects under progress took place.

In the 11th plan (2007-12) 60 cities are to be developed as solar cities. Thane is one of them. As per Government directive all Government buildings should meet 10% of their energy needs through renewable energy by the year 2010, progressively increasing to 20% by 2020 and 30% by 2030.
1000 MW capacity of solar power is to be achieved by the end of 12th plan 2017
India recently unveiled a plan calling for 20GW of solar power production by 2020. Its 2040 target is 200 GW of solar power.

Vinod Tawade - Biography


Vinod Tawade is presently the leader of the BJP party in Legislative Council of Maharashtra and he was elected as an MLA in assembly election conducted on 15 October from Borivali Constituency of Mumbai.


Tawade was born on 20 July 1963. His family was in a small house Lalbaug initially. It moved to Santacruz. Tawade went to Saint Anthony School. He did engineering graduation from College of Engineering, Pune. After his graduation he became a full time Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) a student organizationi supported by RSS.

In 1991, there was an ABVP morcha took place with one lakh students participating in it organized by Vinod Tawade. Every body immediately noticed because such massive demonstrations could be organized only by Bal Thackeray of Shiv Sena. Immediately, Pramod Mahajan and Gopinath Munde asked Tawade to join BJP. But Tawade refused saying he is not suited for political party work. But Mahajan persisted and got Tawade into the party in 1995. He was made general secretary of Maharashtra BJP. In 1997, he was made Mumbai unit chief.

He was elected as legislative council member for three time and has rich experience in legislative work.
