Durgashtami Story

Demon Durgama was the son of Ruru, of  the family of Hirankyaksha. He reasoned that  that Devas had been becoming powerful because of Fire Sacrifices being performed by Sages and Brahmanas according to the Mantras prescribed in the Vedas and he decided to stops those sacrifices.

He performed very severe Tapasya for thousand years and  Lord Brahma arrived by His Swan Chariot. The Demon asked for the boon to give him away all the Vedas. As soon as Brahma gave the boon, there was complete chaos among Brahmanas and Sages as none could carry out daily worship with mantras. All daily and periodic activities like  ‘Sandhya Vandana’,  ‘Homas’, ‘Sraddhas’, ‘Jata Karmas’, rites after deaths, ‘Vrathas’ or ‘Pujas’ could not be performed. Allied  activities using  astrology, astronomy, fine arts, Artha Sastras, the Sciences of Wars like Astras, Sastras also could not be undertaken. The wherewithal of life got  terminated. Indeed the balance of Nature, Planetary movement, lack of rains, water, crops, food and a threat to humanity and the other worlds, the entire creation was all affected!  Humanity in general including beasts and birds were affected for want of food.  Then  Maha Devi appeared as  ‘Shakambhari Devi’ and made possible a dispensation of vegetables and fruits to satisfy hunger and thirst.

Meanwhile one thousand ‘Akshouhinis’ of army  of Danavas were engaged in a fight with Maha Devi. From Her Personality emerged innumerable Shakti personalities like Bagada, Bhairavi, Chhinnamasta, Jambhini, Kalika, Kamakshi, Kamala, Matangi, Mohini, Shodasa, Tarini, Tripura and Tulja Devi.

These Maha Shaktis and their army  routed and destroyed Danavas headed by Durgama. Maha Devi stated in Her own profound voice for the totality of Universe to  hear:

‘I am Durga the killer of the Demon Durgama. There is nothing like ‘Durgama’ or 'Unsurpassable' for Me! Vedas constitute parts of My Being. Protect them as a precious gift from Me.’ 

Having said thus Maha Bhagavati disappeared and the Trinity, Indra and Devas praised the Adi Shakti ( Primeval Energy) as the Universe was stabilised and World Order was re-established once again.
