Ganpatrao Deshmukh is 88 and he won 10 elections on the the Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) ticket. Deshmukh is fighting his 13th election. He was first elected an MLA in 1962. He lost in 1972 and 1995 polls. In 2012, Deshmukh completed 50 years in the Maharashtra assembly and was felicitated by all MLAs and the government.
He became a minister of state for a brief period was when Sharad Pawar split the Congress and formed the Progressive Democratic Front government in 1978. For second time in 1999, when the PWP supported the Congress-NCP alliance, he became a minister.
