Satyanand Stokes is originally Samuel Evans Stokes transformed the economy of the Shimla Hills of Himachal Pradesh by introducing the Delicious variety of apples into the region. Stokes arrived
in the Shimla Hills in 1904, at twenty-one years of age, to work at the leper home there, leaving his
prosperous family Philadelphia USA. He formed his own order of Franciscan friars of Christian missionaries. But after few years, he chose the life of a householder, married a local Pahari girl, and eventually converted to Hinduism.
He participated in the freedom struggle through Congress and was jailed.
